I’m David Carr. I grew up in Ireland and moved 3,535 miles from home for graduate school at the University of Notre Dame. I am proud to call myself a Naughton Fellow.

I like to build consumer apps. You learn so much from owning the whole cycle end to end: building the minimum viable product, sitting on calls with the people who might use the app, running marketing experiments, then changing the app based on what comes back. Early on the building and the marketing have to happen at the same time, because neither waits for the other. What I enjoy most is the feeling of having a small positive impact on hundreds of people’s day, every day. That starts with the first hundred users.

I have created seven apps so far, all around a full-time job. Braindex is the latest, a daily trivia game, and Pi-Squared is a maths puzzle that got me named in the Irish 30 under 30. The numbers for all of them are public, including the small ones.

Day job: architecting systems and building dashboards that surface a single source of truth. I serve as Director of Strategic Insights & Innovation at AEBetancourt.

I read a lot of newsletters and love listening to podcasts. The guides came out of the questions students kept asking me on calls. I was answering the same ones often enough that writing them down in one place seemed more useful. The newsletter and whitepapers are where I write up what I am learning while I build.

I studied Actuarial Mathematics at Dublin City University and Technology, Engineering & Entrepreneurship at the University of Notre Dame. I love sport, learning, entrepreneurship, data, technology, writing and mathematics. Here are some of my proudest achievements.

My goal here is to share my work, share what I learn along the way, and be useful to hungry young entrepreneurs starting out.
