Privacy Policy -- Fia Says
Last updated: 18 October 2026
Fia Says is an Irish-language learning game made by David Carr ("I", "me"). This policy explains what information the app uses, why, and how you can delete it. The short version: you can play the whole game without an account and without giving me anything. If you create an account, I collect what is needed to run your profile and the leaderboard, I never sell it, and you can delete it any time from inside the app.
Playing without an account
You can play every game as a guest. As a guest:
- No username, email address or phone number is asked for
- Your progress, streak and best scores are stored on your phone only
- You do not appear on the leaderboard
If you delete the app, guest progress goes with it.
What the app collects if you create an account
Accounts are for people aged 13 or over. See "Children" below.
Details you give when signing up
- Username -- the name shown on the leaderboard. Do not use your full real name if you would rather not be identifiable
- Email address -- to sign you in and to let you recover your account
- Phone number -- used to secure the account and to recover access if you lose your email
- Which sign-in method you used (Apple, Google or email)
If you sign in with Apple you can choose to hide your email address, and Apple sends a private relay address instead.
Profile questions
Sign-up asks a short set of questions so the games can be pitched at the right level and so I can understand who is learning Irish. Each one can be answered "Prefer not to say", and choosing that does not limit the app in any way.
- Age range
- Gender
- County, or country if you are outside Ireland
- Your learning goals and current level of Irish
Game data
- Your scores, streak, XP and best scores
- Each game you finish: the game type, score, number correct, the words in that game, and the date
- The type of device you are using (iPhone or Android)
Analytics
Fia Says uses Google Analytics for Firebase (GA4) to understand how the app is used, for example which games are played most and where people give up. This includes device model, operating system, app version and approximate country, worked out from your IP address, which is not stored. Analytics is collected whether or not you have an account, and it is not linked to your name, email address or phone number. It is not used for advertising.
What the app does not do
- No ads, and no advertising or tracking across other apps and websites
- No selling or renting of your information, ever
- No sharing of your email address or phone number with anyone
- No access to your contacts, photos, camera, microphone or location
Why it is used
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Username | To show who holds a leaderboard place |
| Email address | To sign you in and recover your account |
| Phone number | To secure the account and recover access |
| Age range, gender, county | To understand who is learning Irish and where |
| Learning goals and level | To pitch the games at the right level for you |
| Game data | To save your progress and run the leaderboard |
| Analytics | To see what is working and make the games better |
Who can see it
Only your username and your score appear on the leaderboard, and only if you have an account. Guests never appear on it.
Your email address, phone number, age range, gender, county and learning goals are never shown to other players.
Where it is stored
On Google Firebase (Google Cloud) servers in the EU. Google processes this data on my behalf under its data processing terms. Information is encrypted in transit.
How long it is kept
Until you delete your account. Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months.
Deleting your data
Open Fia Says → tap the person icon (top right) → Delete my account. This permanently deletes your username, email address, phone number, profile answers, game history and leaderboard entries.
You can also email me (address below) and I will delete it for you within 30 days. Progress stored only on your phone is removed when you delete the app.
Your rights
If you are in the UK or EU, you have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, and to complain to your data protection authority (in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission). Email me to make a request.
Children
Accounts are for people aged 13 and over, and you are asked to confirm this when you sign up. I do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
Younger children can play the whole game as a guest, which asks for nothing and stores nothing off the phone.
If you are a parent and believe your child under 13 has created an account, contact me and I will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date.
